Doodleburgers spotted in SoHo

The Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop closed in 2008 after 58 years as a beloved Yale hangout. But its signature Doodleburger recently made a reappearance at a New York burger joint. Every month, Hamburger America on MacDougal Street features a favorite burger from around the country, and in September, owner and hamburger historian George Motz revived the Doodleburger. Doodle superfan Richard Nash Gould ’68, ’72MArch, who joined Motz at the grill on September 5 for the official launch, explains how to make a Doodleburger: “Put the patty on the grill, sprinkle chopped onions on the top, turn it over so onions are on the bottom, then white American cheese and a sliced tomato on that.”

Motz’s version was a little bigger than its namesake, but Gould is okay with that. “When you eat it, you get this—this memory comes back to you,” he says. “One guy, a Yale alum with his fiancée, was practically crying.”
