Home to the gallery’s collection of ancient Mediterranean art, the hall features works ranging from two large Assyrian stone reliefs from the ninth century BCE to a mosaic dating from the sixth century CE. In 1990, sculptor Richard Serra ’64MFA created his site-specific work Stacks for the space, but it was moved in 2006, with Serra’s blessing, to the lower-level courtyard. The ancient art took its place. “You can’t have paintings or works on paper in this space,” says associate curator of ancient art Lisa Brody ’91, “nothing sensitive to light.”
