Weekly Sports Roundup (1/21–1/27)

The women's ice hockey team hosted its third annual "White Out for Mandi" fund-raiser at its match against Colgate last week, honoring the memory of center Mandi Schwartz ’10, who died of leukemia in 2011. The fundraiser inspired the Bulldogs (4–16–1, 3–10–1 ECAC) to defeat Colgate 2–0 and pull into a tie for ECAC Hockey's eighth and final conference playoff spot. The team bounced back from a 5–0 loss against No. 4 Cornell earlier in the week.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

The Bulldogs remain unstoppable this season. Yale’s swimmers defeated Fordham 201–97 and Rider 203–93 last Saturday, bringing Yale’s record to a perfect 7–0 on the season. The Elis face off against Princeton and Harvard next weekend.

Men’s Tennis

Last week was a strong one for the men's tennis team. The Bulldogs (3–0) surged past Quinnipiac in their season opener, scoring 7–0, and went on the defeat Fairfield 9–0 and Sacred Heart 6–1 on Sunday. The team heads to Tennessee in two weeks to face the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Middle Tennessee State University.

Women’s Tennis

The No. 28 Bulldogs played at their best this weekend, making a upsetting No. 19 Ole Miss 4–2 in their first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The team became a dominant force in the doubles game, where Yale women won the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.

Men’s Basketball

Though the Bulldogs (7–12, 1–1 Ivy) fell 65–51 to Brown on January 19, the men’s basketball team returned to face the Bears again on Saturday—and this time, the Bears weren’t so lucky. The Bulldogs won 76–64, earning their first Ivy League win.
 
Women’s Basketball

The women’s team (6–10, 1–1 Ivy) also defeated Brown on Friday, recovering from a 68–67 loss to the Bears last week. Sarah Halejian ’15 recorded her first career double-double, with 21 points and 10 rebounds, leading Yale to a 59–47 victory.

Women’s Track and Field

At Friday’s Terrier Invitational at Boston University, several athletes made personal bests on the field. Grace Brittan ’16, Emily Cable ’15, Jennifer Donnelly ’13, Jenna Hessert ’14 and Amanda Snajder ’14 each set personal records in various events over the course of the meet.
 
Men’s Track and Field

The men’s team also finished with a number of top-ten finishes and personal bests at the Terrier Invitational this weekend. Paul Chandler ’14, Timothy Hillas ’13, Dana Lindberg ’14, John McGowan ’13 and William Rowe ’15 each made new personal bests.

Men’s Ice Hockey

The Bulldogs (12–5–3, 8–4–1 ECAC) added a sixth victory to their winning-streak at a game against No. 18 Cornell, where No. 7/8 Yale skated to a 3–2 win. But the unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end the next day, when the Bulldogs fell 4–1 to Colgate.

Women’s Gymnastics

The Bulldogs turned in a season-best score of 187.900 at Sunday afternoon's Ivy opener against Penn, whose gymnasts were last year's Ivy champions and scored 191.525 at this weekend's meet. Tara Feld ’13 led Yale's athletes and earned a third-place finish in the all-around.

Men’s Fencing

The men's fencing team posted a 3–2 win record at the NYU Invitational on Sunday, matching its record in the past three years. The Bulldogs defeated UNC, Wayne State and NYU with 16–11, 19–8 and 19–8 verdicts, respectively. The team heads to Vassar this weekend.

Women’s Fencing

The women's team was not so fortunate at the NYU Invitational this weekend. The Bulldogs posted a 1–4 record — the same record they posted at the invitational in the past two years. The team's only victory came in the match against Wayne State, where the Bulldogs won 20–7.

Men’s Squash

Though the Bulldogs ended Trinity’s 252-match winning streak last January, the men’s squash team was not so fortunate this year. The No. 4 Bulldogs fell 7–2 to No. 2 Trinity, but quickly bounced back from the loss and defeated No. 15 Navy 9–0 over the weekend.
 
Women’s Squash

The No. 3 Bulldogs (9–1, 2–0 Ivy) saw their first loss of the season last week, when they fell 5–4 to No. 4 Trinity. The women’s squash team returns to the court next weekend, when the Bulldogs face off against No. 1 Princeton and No. 5  Penn.
