A Sundance victory dance

Back in the headlines: last week's Yale Alumni Magazine Newsmaker, Kalyanee Mam ’99 (at lectern above), is this week's Sundance Film Festival winner. Mam, a lawyer and human rights activist as well as filmmaker, snagged the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for her documentary, A River Changes Course.

"We're so shocked," Mam said in accepting the award. A River Changes Course—which follows the lives of rural Cambodians who lose their traditional, land- and river-based livelihoods to rapid development—"is about family, a universal film," Mam said. "Not just about globalization but about our connection with each other. Events like these bring our communities together, to celebrate the beauty of our world."
