Storm cancels GALA reunion but not intrepid IvyQ conference"Historic, crippling blizzard ahead," says Weather.com, followed by a qualifier: "Winter Storm Nemo could go down in the history books of crippling New England blizzards." Then again, maybe not. Whatever, a few Yale events have already been canceled in anticipation of howling winds and blinding snow this weekend. A little snow and rain are predicted for tonight, with the storm expected to begin in earnest later on Friday. GALA, the association of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender alumni, has canceled the LGBT reunion scheduled for this weekend. The kids, however, are upholding Yale's honor as the Gay Ivy—hosting IvyQ, an annual pan-Ivy gathering of LGBTQ undergraduates. (The Q stands for "questioning" or "queer," depending on whom you ask.) Conference chair Hilary O'Connell, a Yale junior, says she expects 500 students, arriving tonight. Fortunately, they have a full schedule of speakers and don't need to bank on a Friday afternoon master's tea about Cole Porter and subsequent performance of Porter songs. Those events—part of a centennial celebration for one of the class of 1913's most famous members—will be rescheduled, university spokeswoman Dorie Baker says. Updates will be available on Yale's emergency website.
