Weekly Sports Roundup (2/4–2/10)

As Yale College enjoys its first snow day in over three decades, it looks like professors trudging to campus to teach classes weren't the only ones to see their schedules disrupted by almost three feet of snow. The Ivy League Fencing Championship at Harvard was postponed because of the storm, and the ECAC Division I Indoor Team Championship in New York for women's tennis was canceled. The men's lacrosse team, women's ice hockey team, and the women's gymnastics team were also unable to compete this weekend.

Men's Basketball

The snow was no match for the men's basketball team this weekend. The Bulldogs (9–14, 3–3 Ivy) defeated Penn 68–59 on Friday and travelled up to Princeton to beat the Tigers 69–65 on Saturday. None of the players on the current basketball team roster were even born the last time the Bulldogs swept the Penn-Princeton road trip (1986–87).

Women's Squash

It was another impressive weekend for the No. 5 Bulldogs (11–3, 4–2 Ivy), who swept two ranked teams on Wednesday and Friday. The team defeated No. 9 Brown and No. 8 Dartmouth, and heads to Harvard this week. If the Bulldogs beat the Crimson, they will finish the season tied for second place in the Ivy League.

Men's Squash

The men's team performed just as well last week. The No. 4 Bulldogs (11–2, 5–1 Ivy) swept Brown on Wednesday and beat No. 8 Dartmouth 7–2 on Friday, and were supposed to face off against No. 3 Harvard on Sunday but the match was postponed because of the storm. 

Men's Tennis

The Bulldogs defeated the University of Alabama at Birmingham 4–3 on Saturday, but lost momentum on Sunday, when it fell 6–1 to No. 43 Middle Tennessee State University. The team heads to the ECAC Division I Indoor Team Championship in Ithaca, N.Y. next weekend.

Women's Basketball

The Bulldogs broke a two-game losing streak on Saturday, when they defeated Penn 65–56. But the women's team (7–13, 2–4 Ivy) went on to fall 99–53 to Princeton, which is currently at the top of the Ivy standings. The Bulldogs head to Cornell and Columbia this week.  

Women's Track and Field 

The Bulldogs trekked to Princeton this weekend to compete at the annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton meet. The team finished third with 25 points, behind first-place Princeton with 79 points and second-place Harvard with 55 points. Mackenzie Mathews ’16 placed first with a time of 8.94 in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a new personal best, and 10 other Bulldogs made personal bests at the meet. 

Men's Track and Field

The men's team also finished third at the meet with 23 points, behind Princeton, who came in first with 88 points, and Harvard, who came in second with 59 points. Paul Chandler ’14 and Brendan Sullivan ’16 earned first and second, respectively, in the pole vault on Saturday, and Chandler posted a personal best with his vault of 15'9" (4.8 m). In addition to posting the best indoor vault from a Yale athlete since 2008, Chandler became one of five athletes on the men's team to qualify for the IC4As next weekend.
