Weekly Sports Roundup (2/18–2/24)As the winter season approaches its end, many of Yale's teams played at their strongest last week. The men's ice hockey team (14–10–3, 10–9–1 ECAC) recovered from a 4–1 loss to No. 1 Quinnipiac on Friday—the team's fifth straight loss—and went on to claim the Ivy championship when they defeated Princeton 4–3 on Saturday. The win marks the third Ivy title for the Bulldogs in four years. In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity): Women's Tennis The Bulldogs (6–1) carried their winning streak into two matches last week. The No. 23 team defeated Boston University by a score of 7–0, and went on to a 6–1 victory over Miami (Ohio). The team will rest for two weeks before hosting St. John's (N.Y.) on March 9. Coed Sailing The No. 2 coed sailing team saw a solid start to its spring season this weekend. The Bulldogs finished second at the Bob Bavier Team Race hosted by the College of Charleston. Their performance was all the more impressive since they had been unable to practice at all in recent weeks because of the cold New England weather. Women's Track and Field Though the Bulldogs finished seventh with 19 points at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at Harvard this weekend, Amanda Snajder ’14 broke a 22-year Yale record for her performance in the pentathlon. Her score of 3,658 earns her a spot at the ECAC championships in Boston next weekend. Harvard won the meet with 117 points, immediately followed by Cornell with 112.6 points. Men's Basketball In the lead-up to its game against Harvard on Saturday, the Bulldogs (11–16, 5–5 Ivy) had some promising results when they defeated Dartmouth by a score of 78–67 on Friday. But Harvard ultimately got the upper hand: the Crimson defeated the men's basketball team 72–66. Four games remain for the Bulldogs this season. Women's Basketball The women's team followed a similar trajectory to the men's last week. The Bulldogs (10–14, 5–5 Ivy) defeated Dartmouth 66–55 on Friday but went on to lose to Harvard on Friday, though the 69–66 margin was tighter than it was for the men. Women's Ice Hockey It was more mixed results for the Bulldogs (5–20–3, 4–14–3 ECAC) last week. Though the team saw its first win in almost a month when it defeated Princeton by a score of 4–2 on Saturday, the women's ice hockey team fell 4–0 to Quinnipiac the day before. The team faces ends the season on Tuesday evening, when it returns to the ice to face off against No. 5 Harvard. Men's Squash In the last week alone, the men's squash team (12–5, 5–2 Ivy) more than doubled its losses for the season. With a 6–3 loss to No. 3 Harvard, a 7–2 loss to No. 1 Trinity and a 6–3 loss to Princeton, the Bulldogs saw their national ranking slip from No. 2 to No. 4. Still, the team did manage to defeat No. 5 Cornell 7–2 and finished the season up two spots from last year in the national rankings. Women's Gymnastics With a score of 191.100 points, the Bulldogs finished last at the Ivy Classic on Saturday. The team trailed just 0.500 points behind Penn, and Brown came in first with 193.925 points, immediately followed by Cornell with 193.025 points. Tara Feld ’13 won the individual Ivy championship on the floor exercise with a score of 9.825 points. Men's Track and Field The Bulldogs finished last with 15.5 points at this year's Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at Harvard. Kevin Dooney ’16 earned a new personal best and qualified for the IC4As for his time of 14:33.36 in the 5,000-meter run. Women's Lacrosse The Bulldogs (0–1, 0–0 Ivy) saw a weak start to their season this weekend. Holy Cross defeated the women's lacrosse team 16–13 in the season opener on Saturday afternoon, despite a strong performance from Jen DeVito ’14, who scored four goals. Men's Lacrosse The men's team (0–1, 0–0 Ivy) also did not perform well at the season opener this weekend. Kirby Zdrill ’13 had a career-high three goals, but the No. 17 Bulldogs fell by just one point to St. John's, which scored 10 goals.
