Men's hockey wins OT upset in first round of NCAAAfter last weekend's scoreless pair of games in the ECAC Tournament in Atlantic City, No. 15 Yale barely made the 16-team field for the NCAA Tournament, and it was widely assumed that they would lose their first-round game with No. 2 Minnesota. But the Bulldogs squeaked by the Gophers today in the West Regional in Grand Rapids, Michigan, winning 3–2 in the opening seconds of overtime, earning the right to move on to the regional final tomorrow (where they'll play the winner of this evening's North Dakota–Niagara game), and, judging by the noise on Twitter, busting a lot of people's brackets. The winning goal came from Jesse Root ’14 just nine seconds into overtime. Yale led after two periods after a full-strength goal by Kenny Agostino ’14 and a power-play shot by Gus Young ’14, but Minnesota came back to tie it in the third. Goalie Jeff Malcolm ’13 had 26 saves. This is Yale's fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last five seasons. If they win tomorrow, they'll go to college hockey's "Frozen Four" (held this year in Pittsburgh) for the first time since 1952.
