Melanoma survivors keep tanningMelanoma, the skin cancer that kills a person every hour in the United States, is not enough to keep some survivors out of the sun—or the tanning salon. More than 27 percent of melanoma survivors don't use sunscreen, ever, according to new data from Yale researchers. “That blew my mind,” says Anees Chagpar, an associate professor of surgical oncology at Yale Cancer Center and a study author, in a Los Angeles Times article. What's more, 2.1 percent of melanoma survivors had been to a tanning salon in the past year, and 15.4 percent rarely or never stay in the shade. "It's incredibly disturbing that even after getting the disease once, some survivors continue these practices which would put them at greater risk of getting it again," Chagpar says in a Yale release. She and her colleagues from the School of Public Health, School of Medicine, and Yale Cancer Center analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey of 2010. They presented their findings this week at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.
