Bulldogs win! Men's hockey will play in national championship (UPDATED)An overtime goal by captain Andrew Miller ’13 gave the Yale men's hockey team a 3–2 victory over UMass–Lowell in Pittsburgh today—and their first-ever trip to the finals of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs dominated the game in terms of possession and shots on goal, coming out to a 2–0 lead in the first period on power play goals by Mitch Witek ’16 and Antoine Laganiere ’13. But UMass scored two goals in 14 seconds late in the second period to tie the score. Miller's winning goal came about seven minutes into overtime. Unlike two years ago, when Yale was ranked No. 1 in the nation for eight weeks, this year's team barely made it into the NCAA Tournament with a No. 15 seed. But they upset midwestern powers Minnesota and North Dakota in the West Regional to go to hockey's Frozen Four for the first time since 1952. And if No. 1 Quinnipiac beats St. Cloud State in a game that is just getting under way, there could be a national championship between two schools just ten miles apart. Quinnipiac has beaten Yale three times this year: twice in the regular season and in the consolation game of the ECAC Tournament. Saturday's game at 7 PM Eastern time will be televised on ESPN.
UPDATE: Quinnipiac beat St. Cloud State 4–1 in tonight's other semifinal game. It'll be an all–New Haven County national championship game Saturday night.
