Weekly Sports Roundup (4/8-4/14)

Last weekend, the men's ice hockey team made Yale history when it took home a national championship—and a lot of other Yale teams had good weeks, too. The No. 16 men's lacrosse team took down Brown 11–8 on Friday, increasing its winning streak to four games and raising its Ivy record to 3–2. With one more conference game remaining this season, the Bulldogs are currently second in the standings, behind Cornell, which has a 4–0 Ivy record.

Women's Lacrosse

The women's team, meanwhile, also earned a conference victory last week—its first of the season. The Bulldogs (7–5, 1–4 Ivy) beat Columbia 13–12 on Saturday. The game served as a fundraiser to help Oceanside Community Service and Island Harvest with relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The Bulldogs will host Cornell on Saturday.

Women's Tennis

After two impressive days of competition this weekend, the Bulldogs moved up in the standings, and are now first in the Ivy League. The No. 37 team (15–2, 4–0 Ivy) defeated Cornell 6–1 on Saturday and went on to beat No. 60 Columbia 5–2 on Sunday. The Bulldogs remain undefeated at home.

Men's Heavyweight Crew

In their second race of the spring season, the Bulldogs defeated Dartmouth in four races on Saturday, at home on the Housatonic River. The third varsity eight was over 6 seconds ahead of Dartmouth, the second varsity eight was over 10 seconds ahead, the varsity eight was about 2 seconds ahead, and the varsity four came in about 9 seconds ahead. The Bulldogs take on Columbia and Penn this weekend.

Women's Crew

The women's team also did not disappoint this weekend. The Bulldogs defeated BU, Dartmouth and Clemson to take home the Class of 1985 Cup, which Dartmouth claimed last year. Yale won the varsity eight, varsity four, and second varsity four races this weekend. Next up: The team hosts No. 5 Princeton on Saturday.

Men's Lightweight Crew

It was a week of Ivy League victories for the lightweight crew team. The No. 2 Bulldogs defeated Columbia and Penn on Saturday, taking home the Dodge Cup for the 10th straight year, and went on to take down No. 3 Cornell the next day. The team will host Dartmouth on the Housatonic River next weekend.

Men's Golf

The Bulldogs kept up an impressive season at the Princeton Invitational this weekend. Although the team came in second place on the first day of competition, they ramped up their performance for day two, edging out Princeton by just two strokes. This year is the second year in a row that the Bulldogs claimed the invitational, which features all seven other Ivy League schools, in addition to several other nonconference teams.

Men's Tennis

Last week yielded some mixed results for the Bulldogs, whose Ivy League record is now 2–2. The No. 65 men's tennis upset No. 51 Cornell with a score of 4–3 on Saturday, but lost 6–1 to No. 49 Columbia on Sunday. Three more conference games remain for the Bulldogs this season.

Coed Sailing

It was an eventful week for the No. 1 Bulldogs. The team placed sixth at the New England Dinghy Championship at Brown, third at the Oberg Trophy at Boston University, and two separate Yale teams placed second and seventh at the Short Beach Invitational. This week, the team will compete for the Thompson Trophy and will also race in the New England Freshman Championship.

Women's Sailing

The women's team, meanwhile, saw equally strong results. The No. 1 Bulldogs took home the Wick and Shrew Trophies on the Thames River in New London, Conn., raising their winning streak to four regattas. The regular spring season came to an end with last week's regatta, and the women's sailing team will head to the Women's New England Championship, hosted by Tufts in Medford, Massachusetts, next weekend.

Women's Track and Field

Although the Bulldogs lost their annual dual meet against Harvard by 20 points, several athletes posted first-place finishes and recorded new personal bests. Kira Garry ’15, Tori Flannery ’13, and Mackenzie Mathews ’16 earned personal records in their respective events, while Karleh Wilson ’16, Emily Urciuoli ’14 and Millie Chapman ’14 finished first place in their events. 

Men's Track and Field

The men's team lost by a wider margin, but its athletes also posted strong performances against Harvard on Saturday. James Shirvell ’14 finished first in the 800-meter dash, posting a time of 1:51.34, and Michael Pierce ’13 came in fifth at 1:55.00. John McGown ’15, Matt Nussbaum ’15, and captain Timothy Hillas ’13 took the top three spots in the 1,500-meter run. The Elis team up with Harvard to take on Oxford and Cambridge this Tuesday.

Women's Golf

After a three-week break from competition, the Bulldogs jumped back into action with impressive vigor at this year's Hoya Invitational, hosted by Georgetown in Gaithersberg, Md. The team finished second overall—up six spots over their performance last year. Seo Hee Moon ’14 finished in outright fourth with a 217 overall, while Shreya Ghei finished seventh with a 227. 

Gymnastics

The conclusion of the 2013 season came on Sunday for the gymnastics team, which competed in the USAG Collegiate National Championships. Tara Feld ’13 was Yale's sole competitor in the event finals on Sunday, and she finished 11th on the floor exercise with a score of 9.575. The championship is the final meet of Feld's Yale career.

Baseball

The Bulldogs did not let a series of disappointing losses in the past few weeks deter them from taking Harvard on with full force last week. Yale (8–21, 5–7 Ivy) defeated Harvard 7–3 on Saturday and 5–2 on Sunday, but also lost with scores of 2–1 and 6–2 in the other double-header games. The team also fell 3–2 to Fairfield last Wednesday. With the second win against Harvard, Yale head coach John Stuper saw his 400th career coaching victory.

Softball

It was another tough week for the softball team. Although Yale (8–26, 3–9 Ivy) managed to defeat Wagner 5–3 on Wednesday, the Bulldogs fell to Wagner 5–4 later the same day, and went on to lose four games against Harvard this weekend. The scores were 7–4 and 4–2 on Saturday, and 12–3 and 5–3 on Sunday. Despite the losses, Christy Nelson ’13 became Yale's all-time home run leader on Sunday, when she belted the 18th of her career.
