We really don't mean to sound triumphalist. Not all Yalies succeed all the time. But this has been quite a week.
Along with the NCAA hockey championship and the four Pulitzer Prizes, Yalies topped two other national competitions the other day.
On April 13, Yale took first place in Division I of the National Academic Quiz Tournament. Matthew Jackson ’14, Ashvin Srivatsa ’14, Spencer Weinreich ’15, and graduate student Kevin Koai made up the winning team, which upset "the expected winner, the University of Virginia, on the final question," the Yale Daily News reports.
The next day, the team of Samuel Ward-Packard ’14 and Ben Kornfeld ’13 won the United States Universities National Debate Championship. Kornfeld was also the top varsity speaker in the British Parliamentary–style tournament.
And they said Yalies were only good for brawn, not brains.
Unlike the hockey team, however, the academic champs were not necessarily "spotted in Berkeley College’s North Court lounging in the sun, red Solo cups in hand, shirts off and baseball caps turned backward."
