Weekly Sports Roundup (4/22–4/28)

For the third year in a row, Yale's women's tennis team is the Ivy League champion. The team secured its title—shared with Columbia—with a 6–1 win over Brown on Saturday in Providence. The Bulldogs (17–3, 6–1 Ivy) are ranked No. 37 in the nation and will go to the NCAA Tournament. They'll find out this evening who they're playing.

Baseball

The Bulldog nine finished their season in style, sweeping a four-game series against Brown—two in New Haven on Friday and two in Providence on Saturday. The team (13–25, 10–10 Ivy) finished in fifth place in the Ivy League.

Softball

Yale's softball team also played a pair of double-headers with Brown over the weekend, splitting both the home games on Friday and the away games on Saturday with the Bears. In Providence, the team hit eight home runs, bringing their single-season total to 31—a new school record. The Bulldogs (10–36, 5–15 Ivy) play Marist this afternoon in their season finale.

Heavyweight crew

The Yale crew finished third in its last dual meet of the season, the Carnegie Cup against Cornell and Princeton, on Saturday. Princeton swept the varsity, second varsity, and third varsity races, with Cornell in second place in each and Yale in third. Next up is the Eastern Sprints on May 19.

Lightweight crew

Harvard and Yale's lightweights were ranked No.1 and No. 2, respectively, going into the annual Harvard-Princeton-Yale regatta in Princeton on Saturday, and that's how they finished. The Crimson beat the Bulldogs by 1.4 seconds in the first varsity race to win the Goldthwait Cup; they also took the Vogel Cup for overall dominance in the races. Yale won the "Freshman Bowl" for the fastest freshman eight.

Women's crew

Yale's women rowers had a great week, beating Radcliffe on the Charles River on Saturday to take the Case Cup for the 13th time in 15 years and topping Brown on Monday on the Housatonic in Derby. The team hosts Rhode Island on May 11 before turning to championship races.

Men's golf

In the Ivy League championship tournament in Owings Mills, Maryland, this weekend, the Yale men led the field going into the final round on Sunday but end ended up in second place, just five strokes behind Princeton. The team had three tournament wins for the year.

Women's golf

The Yale women finished third at the Ivy tournament behind Harvard and Princeton. Three Bulldogs finished in the top ten and were named to the All-Ivy team.

Men's lacrosse

The men's lacrosse team fended off a late challenge from Harvard in Cambridge on Saturday to win 11–10 and secure the number-two seed in next week's Ivy League Tournament. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 13 in the nation.

Women's lacrosse

After a close 16–15 loss to Boston University on Wednesday, the women's lacrosse team ended its season with a 10–8 victory over Brown in Providence on Saturday. The team ended the season with an 8–7 record (2–5 Ivy), the most wins the team has seen since 2008. The tied for fifth in the final Ivy standings.

Women's sailing

In a regatta that had been postponed for a week because of the Boston Marathon bombing, the women's sailing team placed second on Sunday at the New England Championship in Medford, Massachusetts, behind Boston College. The result was good enough to earn the women a spot in the national championship without competing in the semifinal stage.

Coed sailing

Yale's coed sailors won a narrow victory over Georgetown to win the Western Semifinals at Hampton University in Norfolk, Virginia, last weekend. The win qualifies the No. 6 Bulldogs for the national championship regatta next month.

Men's tennis

The Bulldogs finished a strong season with a 4–3 win over Brown in New Haven on Saturday. With a record of 18–6 (4–3 Ivy), the team finished fourth in the Ivy standings.

Men's track and field

A speedy Eli foursome ran the 4x-mile relay in 16:20.35 at the Penn Relays on Saturday, setting a new Yale record and placing fifth in the event. Yale athletes also competed the following day in the Yale Springtime Invitational, where William Rowe ’15 won the 400-meter hurdles.

Women's track and field

The standout performers for the Bulldog women at the Penn Relays were Nihal Kayali ’13, who finished fourth in the 3,000 meters, and Alisha Jordan ’15, who placed fourth in the triple jump. At the Yale Springtime Invitational the next day, Sydney Cureton ’16 took third in the 100-meter dash.
