Typewriter stalwart Manson Whitlock dies at 96Manson Whitlock, who kept Yale and New Haven typewriters in working order for more than eight decades, died this morning at the age of 96, the New Haven Register reports. Whitlock, whose family was in the book business in the New Haven area, had still been working on typewriters as recently as June in his second-floor office on York Street. Jennifer Kaylin wrote about Whitlock in our January/February issue. In that article, Whitlock wondered aloud about his own longevity and that of the machine to which he had devoted his life. “Has the typewriter remained in use because of me,” he mused, “or am I still around because of the typewriter?”
