Weekly Sports Roundup (9/2-9/15)

As most students were racing from class to class during shopping period, several Yale teams were quickly kicking off their fall seasons—and the results were promising overall. The women's golf team came in first at the Dartmouth Women's Invitational in Hanover, New Hampshire, this weekend, besting ten other teams, including Ivy League rivals Dartmouth and Brown. The team followed its day-one Yale-record score of 286 by shooting a 289 on the second day of competition, finishing 23 strokes ahead of Boston University, which took second place.

In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

Coed Sailing

The No. 2 Bulldogs had a strong start, taking home the Harry Anderson Trophy and the Pine Trophy this weekend. The first event was hosted at home, while the second took place at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Women's Soccer

Ten days after the Bulldogs kicked off their season with a 1–0 win against Stony Brook, the team has gained momentum. Since the first match, the Elis (3–1, 0–0 Ivy) defeated UMass-Lowell 3–1 and Towson 4–3, with the only loss going to Georgetown, a nationally ranked team. Rudy Meredith, the team coach, is implementing a more defensive style with the Bulldogs this fall, and so far, the effort seems to be paying off.

Women's Volleyball

The Bulldogs, who claimed the Ivy Championships for the third straight year in 2012, rallied back into action this month with a string of six non-conference games. The team defeated Colgate 3–0, Seton Hall 3–2, Air Force 3–0 and Army 3–1, losing to Missouri and Stanford with scores of 3–1 and 3–0, respectively. In the weeks to come, the Bulldogs have three more non-conference games before their Ivy opener against Brown on September 28.

Men's Golf

The men's golf team started the season poorly with a loss against No. 22 Texas A&M on September 7, but they were  able to rebound this weekend, claiming first place in the Doc Gimmler tournament in Farmingdale, New York. The Bulldogs beat 13 other teams, including Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia.

Women's Sailing

The No. 3 Bulldogs came in third out of 17 teams at the Toni Deutsch Regatta, which was hosted by MIT on the Charles River. No. 2 Boston College claimed first place. Although the Bulldogs didn't win the competition, this year is the third straight year that they placed in the top three.

Men's Tennis

The Bulldogs started their season with the three-day Princeton-Farnstown Invitational, and some Elis stood out during the competition. Alex Hagermoser ’17 earned three wins during his first college event this weekend, claiming sets against athletes from Princeton, Buffalo, and Columbia. Next up for the team: the Ivy-Plus Invitational, which the team is hosting this coming weekend.

Women's Field Hockey

It's been a disappointing start to the season for the field hockey team. In four games spanning nine days, the Bulldogs (1–3, 0–0 Ivy) won but one match: the September 7 game against Sacred Heart, in which Yale went 6–0. The other games ended in losses: 6–1 to No. 7 Virginia, 4–2 to No. 13 Albany and 4–3 to Hofstra. This weekend, the Bulldogs host Harvard as part of the team's alumnae weekend.

Men's Soccer

And with the men's soccer team, the results weren't looking much better. The Bulldogs took down Sacred Heart with a score of 4–1, but lost their three other games—against Fordham, Fairfield and Lehigh—by just one or two goals. Still, the victory against Sacred Heart was an exciting one for the men's soccer team because Peter Jacobson ’14 scored three goals, making him the first Eli to record a hat trick since 2004.

Men's Cross Country

Yale's cross country runners lost to Harvard in the season opener in Boston this weekend. The Bulldgos' top performance came from Alex Conner ’15, who placed sixth and finished the 8K in just over 25 minutes.

Women's Cross Country

The women, meanwhile, also fell to Harvard. Liana Epstein ’14 completed the 5K in 17:57, finishing second overall. Chandler Olson ’17 and captain Millie Chapman ’14 also placed in the top ten, with times of 18:20 and 18:23, respectively.
