Weekly Sports Roundup (9/16-9/22)

As many Yale teams took to the fields to begin their fall seasons this week, the football team got a promising start to its season with a 39–22 win over Colgate on Saturday, outrushing the Raiders 327–200. Quarterback Henry Furman ’14 ran for three touchdowns and 60 yards, while tailback Tyler Varga ’15 ran for 236 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries. The Bulldogs open Ivy League play with a game against Cornell this weekend.

Women's Golf

Competing at home in the Yale Intercollegiate this weekend, the women's golf team won its second straight tournament, emerging on top of the 17-team field each day of the three-day event. The team's daily scores were 292–292–290, finishing at +22,  19 strokes ahead of second-place Xavier.

Women's Sailing

The No. 3 Bulldogs sailed to a stellar performance at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl this weekend. After 16 races, the team claimed the tournament with a 24-point lead over Dartmouth, the second-place team and the host of the event. This weekend was the Bulldogs' first chance to sail in a new model of boat—known as the "Z420"—which is a lighter-weight version of the more common two-person collegiate dinghy.

Coed Sailing

The No. 1 coed team saw a lot of action this weekend, turning in strong performances in three separate regattas. The Bulldogs placed second at the Hatch Brown at MIT, fourth at the Nevins Trophy at King's Point, and sixth at the BC Central Series hosted by Boston College. Next weekend, Yale will compete in the St. Mary's Intersectional.

Men's Cross Country

The Bulldogs overcame their tough season opener against Harvard with an impressive performance at this year's Brother John "Paddy" Doyle Iona College Meet of Champions in New York City on Saturday. The men's team finished second overall with 97 points, with first place going to No. 13 Iona, the meet's hosts. Alex Conner ’16 and James Random ’17 were Yale's best runners this weekend, crossing the finish line of the 8K race at the exact same time: 25:57.1.

Women's Volleyball

The women's volleyball team (6–3, 0–0 Ivy) started last week's Penn State tournament strong, with two major victories, but ended the day on Saturday with a 3–0 loss to Penn State, the reigning national champions. When the Bulldogs weren't up against the nation's best, they performed well: the team went 3–1 against Eastern Kentucky on Friday and 3–0 against Albany on Saturday. 

Women's Cross Country

Yale's female distance runners went up against some fierce competition at this year's Brother John "Paddy" Doyle Iona College Meet of Champions in New York City on Saturday. Although they didn't do as well as the men, who finished second, the Bulldogs took the 13th spot. Meredith Rizzo ’17 was the team's best runner, coming in at 17th among 190 competitiors with a time of 23:26.17.

Field Hockey

The women's field hockey team opened Ivy play this weekend with disappointing results. The Bulldogs had managed to defeat Harvard for four straight years, but the Crimson finally broke the streak this year with a 3–2 victory. But he team did add a 3–2 win over Vermont to its record, which stands at 2–4.

Men's Tennis

The Bulldogs saw more mixed results this weekend, as they competed in the Ivy Plus Invitational at home this weekend. Five players were able to score wins on the first day of competition, with freshmen Tyler Lu ’17 and Alex Hagermoser ’17 making it to the semifinals, and Lu went on to claim the 'B' draw victory. The team can look forward to a weekend off before the Army Shootout at West Point on October 5 and 6.

Women's Soccer

The Bulldogs' record went from 3–1 to 4–3 this weekend, with  difficult losses on Friday and Sunday. The team fell to Sacred Heart and Fairfield, with scores of 2–1 and 1–0, respectively. Still, the Bulldogs were able to blank Hartford 2–0 on Wednesday.

Men's Soccer

It was no better on the men's side. The team fell to UC Santa Barbara 3–1 on Friday and Cal Poly 3–2 on Sunday. The Bulldogs (1–5, 0–0 Ivy) have had four straight losses in the past 10 days.
