Weekly Sports Roundup (9/23-9/29)

One by land, three by air: those were the touchdowns that wide receiver Deon Randall ’14 scored in the football team's 38-23 victory over Cornell on Saturday. The win, the Bulldogs' Ivy League opener, pushed their overall record to 2-0.

After missing the entire 2012 season with an injury, Randall underlined his return to the Yale Bowl with four consecutive TDs, earning the title of Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman Robert Ries, a free safety, was named the league's rookie of the week after snagging an interception, four solo tackles, and nine overall tackles. Senior quarterback Henry Furman—who ran for three touchdowns in Yale's season opener against Colgate, last week—passed for 353 yards against the Big Red and scored once again on foot.

Women's Golf

Led by freshman Sandy Wongwaiwate, the women's golf team finished second in the Nittany Lion Invitational at Penn State this weekend, with an overall score of 294 (+13). Wongwaiwate herself tied for second with rounds of 72-70-74. Elisabeth Bernabe ’17 and Marika Liu ’15 joined her in the top 10.

Women's Sailing

Light winds at Boston's Regis Bowl didn't prevent the No. 3 women's sailing team from winning its second straight regatta. In 10 races, the Bulldogs topped second-place Boston University's Terriers by 45 points.

Coed Sailing

The coed sailing team upheld its No. 1 status at the St. Mary's Intersectional in Maryland this weekend, trouncing the competition by 100 points. Meanwhile, closer to home, two Yalies qualified for the November national championships: at Yale's McNay Family Sailing Center in Branford, Connecticut, freshmen Ian Barrows and Mitchell Kiss grabbed two of just five berths in the upcoming ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship in Newport, Rhode Island. Also this weekend, Yale finished sixth in the Hood Trophy regatta at Tufts.

Women's Volleyball

Kendall Polan ’14, Yale's captain and two-time Ivy League Player of the Year, led the volleyball team (7-3, 1-0 Ivy) to a sweep over Brown on Saturday. Jesse Ebner ’16 was named Ivy Co-Player of the Week for her 27 kills in the Penn State Classic the previous week.

Women's Cross Country

The Yale women finished ninth at the Boston College Invite on Friday. Kira Garry ’16 placed 25th in the field of 142, with a time of 17:55. Liana Epstein ’14 finished 30th in 18 minutes flat.

Field Hockey

In what coach Pam Stuper calls "one of the best games I have seen us play in my time at Yale," the field hockey team (2-5, 0-2 Ivy) lost, 2-0, to defending national champion Princeton on Friday night. Senior Erica Borgo—who scored four points in a September 22 victory over Vermont—was named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week.

Women's Soccer

Another Yale team also faced the defending national champs in Princeton this weekend—and pulled off an upset. The women's soccer squad (5-3, 1-0 Ivy), in its Ivy opener Saturday, nipped the Tigers in overtime, 3-2. Paula Hagopian ’16 scored the game-winning goal and the title of Ivy League Player Of Week.

Men's Soccer

After losing to Quinnipiac, 1-0, the men's soccer team (1-6) is focusing on "having a good Ivy League season," coach Brian Tompkins says. That season begins at home Friday night against Harvard.
