Weekly Sports Roundup (9/30-10/6)

The women's tennis team saw major disappointment early last week, but quickly bounced back for an impressive series of victories. Captain Annie Sullivan ’14, whose No. 88 national ranking earned her Yale's only spot in the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships this year, fell to North Carolina freshman Hayley Carter on Tuesday, dashing Sullivan's hopes of an All-American Championship.

But Sullivan and her teammates put forth an impressive showing at the Bulldog Invitational over the weekend. The Bulldogs defeated all of their singles opponents from Virginia Tech and Brown on Friday, while maintaining a 2–2 record in doubles against Purdue and Penn. The second day's results were more mixed, but the third day brought more victories for the Bulldogs: Ree Ree Li ’16 and Sherry Li ’17 won the No. 1 doubles match against Dartmouth, and several other doubles pairs brought in further victories for the team.

In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

Football

The Bulldogs earned their third victory of the season—and it was arguably the team's most exciting win of the season so far. Yale staged a major upset against No. 18/19 Cal Poly in California on Saturday, winning with a score of 24–10. The win gave the Bulldogs (3–0, 1–0 Ivy) 30th place in the nation in the Sports Network media poll released today, and 31st in the NCAA coaches poll. The team takes on Dartmouth this weekend in its second conference game of the season.

Coed Sailing

For only the second time in recent memory, the No. 1 Bulldogs claimed the Danmark Trophy at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Drawing 20 teams from across the country to the Thames River in New London, Connecticut, the regatta is the biggest in the fall season. Yale also finished fifth at the Jesuit Open at Fordham, seventh at the Gardiner at University of Rhode Island, and second at the Women's Olympians at Salve Regina.

Men's Soccer

Last week, the men's soccer team broke a five-game losing streak when it defeated Harvard on Saturday evening. The Bulldogs (2–6, 1–0 Ivy) went 2–1 against the Crimson, scoring both of their goals in the final two minutes and 15 seconds of the game. Conference play continues this week, with a game against Dartmouth on Saturday.

Women's Volleyball

The women's volleyball team has been unstoppable in Ivy League play so far. On Friday, the team (9–3, 3–0 Ivy) went 25–17, 25–15 and 25–18 against Harvard, and the results continued on Saturday, when the team defeated Dartmouth 3–0. That match was the Bulldogs' 28th straight Ivy regular season home victory.

Women's Sailing

Urska Kosir ’15 came in third place at the Women's New England Singlehanded Championship this weekend, which earned her a spot at the ICSA Women's Singlehanded Nationals in Newport, Rhode Island, this November. She finished in the top three in all but one race that she sailed in less than 10 knots of wind.

Men's Golf

The Bulldogs ended their two-year winning streak at the Macdonald Cup this weekend. The team ended the first day of competition in second place, and the rankings changed little in the second day, behind Illinois, an NCAA championship contender last year. Next weekend, the Elis will play the F. A. Borsodi Student Championship at home.

Men's Tennis

At the West Point Fall Quad in West Point, N.Y. this weekend, the Bulldogs claimed three-quarters of their singles and doubles matches. Additionally, the team went undefeated against Army. Now, the Bulldogs have a couple of days of rest before they head to the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, which run for five days starting this Thursday.

Men's Cross Country

The Bulldogs finished with 257 points, seventh out of 47 teams, at Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational this weekend. Only two other Ivy League teams—Dartmouth and Harvard--finished in the top ten. Alex Conner ’16, Kevin Dooney ’16 and John McGowan ’15 broke the 25-minute mark with times of 24:55, 24:38 and 24:44, respectively.

Women's Field Hockey

It was another week of mixed results for the women's field hockey team, which fell 3–2 to Quinnipiac just after earning its first conference win of the season in a 3–0 victory against Cornell. The team's record (3–6, 1–2 Ivy) is now a little less bleak as it heads to California to play Cal and No. 6 Stanford next weekend.

Women's Soccer

The Elis' second conference game ended in disappointment this week, when Harvard defeated Yale 3–1. But the women's soccer team (5–4, 1–1 Ivy) still has one conference win under its belt, and with a week left to train for its game against Dartmouth on Saturday, the Bulldogs' hopes of an Ivy Championship win are still within reach.

Women's Ice Hockey

The Bulldogs fell 3–1 to McGill at an exhibition game in Ingalls Rink on Saturday afternoon. Yale opens its regular season on October 19, when it takes on Boston College.
