Weekly Sports Roundup (10/7-10/13)

With the fall season heating up, many of Yale's teams are really shining on the field and the court—and the women's volleyball team is no exception. The Bulldogs added two Ivy League wins to their previous three Ivy victories, making for a perfect 5–0 conference record. The team defeated Penn on Friday and Princeton on Saturday, each with scores of 3–1, and the team can now look forward to nine more Ivy games before the season ends.

In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

Women's Sailing

The No. 1 Bulldogs are unstoppable this season. The women's sailing team claimed the Women's Navy Fall Regatta, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, this weekend, finishing 72 points ahead of second place after 18 races—all in rainy weather. The Bulldogs now prepare for the Atlantic Coast Championship qualifiers.

Coed Sailing

On the No. 1 coed team, it was another eventful weekend. The Bulldogs claimed the New England Match Racing Championship, earning themselves a spot at the ICSA Nationals. The team also finished third at the Moody Trophy, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, and fourth at the Storm Trysail Big Boat Regatta, at the Larchmont Yacht Club.

Women's Crew

This weekend's Head of the Housatonic regatta was an impressive season opener for the women's crew. The Bulldogs had the fastest crews in the collegiate eight (15:11.3), in the pairs (18.46.1), and in the fours (17.25.4). The team had the top four crews in the pair and three of the top four finishers in the four.

Men's Heavyweight Crew

The Head of the Housatonic proved just as eventful for the men's heavyweight crew this weekend. The Bulldogs completed the 2.7-mile course in just 13:24.7 — the fastest time of any crew on Saturday. One race remains for the Bulldogs this fall: the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston next weekend.

Women's Cross Country

After a slightly slow start to its fall season, the women's cross country team has gained momentum. Eleven Bulldogs raced against runners from 40 other teams and came out in third place at the New England Championships, lagging just 13 points above second-place UConn. The top-three athletes on the women's team were Kira Garry ’15, who finished 13th with a time of 17:56; Elizabeth McDonald ’16, who came in 35th with a time of 18:26; and Anna Demaree ’15, who came in three seconds behind McDonald and claimed the 39th spot.

Women's Field Hockey

As the Bulldogs traveled to California for a pair of games in the Golden State, they saw yet another weekend of mixed results. The team (4–7, 1–2 Ivy) defeated Cal with a score of 3–2 on Friday, but the final score was not so positive in the team's match against Stanford, currently ranked 13th in the nation. The Cardinal beat the Bulldogs 4–0.

Men's Soccer

Although the Elis have seen a lackluster season so far, the team has done has been performing well in its conference games: This weekend, the men's soccer team (3–7, 2–0 Ivy) took down Dartmouth 1–0 for an impressive double-overtime victory. Still, the Bulldogs saw defeat earlier in the week, when they fell 2–1 to Albany

Men's Cross Country

The Bulldogs finished 10th, with 305 points, among a competitive group of 41 schools at this Saturday's New England Championships. Michael Cunetta ’14, Tom Harrison ’15, and Alec Borsook ’15 each earned personal bests, with times of 25:06, 25:18, and 26:01, respectively. The team's "A" entry in the men's collegiate fours won the race by just 0.8 seconds with a time of 15:34.6.

Football

The football team ended its three-game winning streak when it traveled up to Hanover, New Hampshire, this weekend. Thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown by the Big Green, the Bulldogs (3–1, 1–1 Ivy) lost by a score of 20–13. Yale was leading 13–6 before Dartmouth rallied for the win. Quarterback Henry Furman ’14 got a touchdown run and punter/placekicker Kyle Cazzetta ’15 made a pair of field goals.

Women's Golf

She may have only just started her career on the women's golf team, but Elisabeth Bernabe ’17 is proving formidable: She claimed the F.A. Borsodi Student Championship, an inter-squad scrimmage, this weekend by shooting two rounds of 74 to finish at 178. Sandy Wongwaiwate ’17 took the second spot, and Deanna Song ’16 finished third.

Men's Golf

It was a more experienced golfer who claimed the championship on the men's team. For the third time in his four-year career, Sam Bernstein ’14 won the F.A. Borsodi Student Championship, an inter-squad scrimmage, by carding rounds of 72-75 to finish at 147. Sean Gaudette ’14 took second place, while Jonathan Lai ’17 and Li Wang ’17 tied for third.

Men's Baseball

Although the Bulldogs aren't in season just yet, they took to the field to compete in this weekend's City Series. Although the team lost its first game against Southern Connecticut with a score of 2–1, the men were able to bounce back from the loss and take down Quinnipiac with a score of 4–2, earning third place in the tournament. And now it's back to off-season training.
