MPH-MBA combo gets a shortcutIf you were unsure why anyone would want joint degrees in management and public health, the Healthcare.gov fiasco might persuade you. Now Yale is offering a way to get those degrees faster. Starting next summer, students can choose an accelerated program that will get them degrees from the School of Management and the School of Public Health in just 22 months—down from the standard 34-month program. The "intensive two-year MBA-MPH" is the first of its kind in the US, according to the SOM website. It consists of a summer of core public health courses, followed by the first-year SOM curriculum, a summer healthcare internship, and an academic year of electives at both schools. By comparison, the existing three-year program comprises a year of core studies at each school, plus a third year of electives. Applicants for the new program must apply to both schools simultaneously, and must be accepted at both. “We think that there is going to be tremendous demand,” public health dean Paul Cleary says in a news release. Howard Forman, who directs the public health school's health care management program, tells the Yale Daily News that tuition for the accelerated program will be "substantially less" than the the three-year program's roughly $170,000 cost. Now if they could only add a degree in IT management.
