Yali comes to New HavenFor 113 years, the Yale-China Association has sent recent Yale grads to teach English to schoolchildren in China. Now they're demonstrating that the chalkboard has two sides: a pair of Chinese fellows arrived in New Haven this fall and are teaching Mandarin to New Haven high school students. The two young college graduates, Haihui Deng and Chuan Long, are teaching at New Haven's Metropolitan Business Academy and Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School. Like their American counterparts in China, the fellows "are charged with the twin tasks of teaching and community engagement," the Yale-China website says: "assisting in Mandarin Chinese instruction, sharing Chinese culture with their students and colleagues, and learning about American culture in depth." The New Haven students "have been asked to speak 'only Chinese' to the visiting fellows and many have already accepted the challenge,” adds Jessica Haxhi, supervisor for world languages at New Haven Public Schools, in a press release. The new fellowship is a pilot; Yale-China hopes to expand it to other American cities, and also to send American students on service-learning trips to China.
