Is there an MBA in the house?With his signature Affordable Healthcare Act facing both assaults from the right and self-inflicted wounds, President Obama just called in a specialist. Yesterday, Obama announced the nomination of Vivek Murthy ’03MD, ’03MBA, to be the next surgeon general of the United States. Murthy, 36, is an internist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and an instructor at Harvard Medical School, but he's best known for his activity in the public health arena: he cofounded and serves as president of Doctors for America, which has supported the passage and implementation of the ACA. But his involvement in public health goes back much further: while still an undergraduate at Harvard in 1995, he cofounded VISIONS, a nonprofit AIDS education group. Murthy will have to be confirmed by the US Senate before he can wear the uniform that will mark him as a vice admiral and head of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps—a job most notable as a bully pulpit for public health education. The hearings could be interesting: not only has Doctors for America been stalwart in its support for Obamacare, it has also advocated for an assault weapons ban and other gun-control legislation.
