Weekly sports roundup (11/25–12/1)

While most Yale students were away last week and consumed with thoughts of Thanksgivukkah and football, the basketball and ice hockey teams were in action. The men's basketball team improved its record to 4–3 with two wins on the road. On Tuesday, they narrowly escaped Easton, Pennsylvania, with a 79–76 win over winless Lafayette, thanks to a last-second three-pointer by Javier Duren ’15. Saturday, they beat Hartford 54–49.

In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

An overtime goal by freshman Chris Ismirlian gave the men's ice hockey team a 3–2 win over Merrimack on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink. The defending national champion Bulldogs (6–2–2) are ranked No. 8 in the nation in the latest USCHO.com poll.

After starting the season with five straight losses, the women's ice hockey team (3–8–1) has won or tied four of their last seven games. This week, they played in the Nutmeg Classic, an annual tournament featuring UConn, Quinnipiac, Yale, and another invited team (this time RIT). The Bulldogs beat UConn 5–4 on Black Friday, thanks to a late power-play goal by freshman Taylor Marchin, and advanced to the finals Saturday night, where they lost to No. 7-ranked Quinnipiac 3–2.

The women's basketball team (3–4) lost two on their Southern road trip this week. On Monday, the Bulldogs lost 91–67 to Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Junior Sarah Halejian—who was named Ivy co-player of the week—had 22 points for Yale. A late rally on Wednesday was not enought to avoid a 66-61 loss to Furman.

The Ivy champion volleyball team found out yesterday where they'll be going for the NCAA tournament this Friday. The Bulldogs will play Pac-12 power Utah in the opening round at State College, Pennsylvania.
