Weekly sports roundup (12/30-1/5)

The women's ice hockey team started the new year strong last week: in their first conference game of 2014, they defeated Colgate 6–4. Although they went on to lose 3–0 to No. 3 Cornell, they are already just one win shy of last year's six victories. The team (5–9–1, 3–4–1 ECAC) faces off against Dartmouth and Harvard this week.

In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

The women's basketball team also opened the new year with a win—but just barely. The Bulldogs (6–7, 0–0 Ivy) defeated Maine with a score of 86–85. Five players shot in double-digits, and the team shot a season-high 48.4 percent from the field. The team will take on New Hampshire this Tuesday before it opens Ivy League play in 11 days.

The results were slightly less favorable for the men's ice hockey team. The No. 10 Bulldogs skated to a 3–3 overtime tie against No. 20 Vermont. Kenny Agostino ’14 scored the first and third goals, and John Hayden ’17 scored the second. Next up for the Bulldogs (7–3–4, 3–2–3 ECAC): a special game against Harvard at Madison Square Garden this Saturday.

The men's basketball team added a third loss to its streak this week, when it fell to Saint Louis 75–55. Playing in his hometown, Javier Duren ’15 scored 13 points, the most of any other Yale athlete at the game. The Bulldogs (5–7, 0–0 Ivy) will play at home for the next three games, the last of which is the Ivy League opener against Brown on January 18.
