Weekly sports roundup: basketball in April! The men's basketball team is still playing in its most successful postseason run in more than 50 years. Following a 72–69 victory against Columbia in the CollegeInsider.com tournament last Wednesday, the Bulldogs (18–13, 9–5 Ivy) have made it to this Saturday's semifinals, in which they will take on the Virginia Military Institute. During the game against Columbia, Javier Duren ’15 scored a career-high 33 points during the game, 26 of them in the second half. In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity): Representing the men's swimming and diving team, Brian Hogan ’16 swam to some impressive times at the NCAA tournament in Austin, Texas this weekend. His time of 4:20.22 in the 500-yard freestyle earned him 34th place, and he came in 38th place in the 200-yard freestyle with his time of 1:36.97. But his best performance came in the 1,650-yard freestyle, his signature event: he finished 18th after swimming 66 laps in just 14:56.99. It was another eventful week for Yale's No. 1 sailors. The women's sailing team took second place at the Dellenbaugh Trophy, which was hosted by Brown and featured eight of the nation's top-10 teams. Meanwhile, the coed sailing team placed third at the Marchiando Team Race at MIT and fifth at the Barque Eagle Team Race, hosted by Coast Guard. With the spring season well underway, the men's lightweight crew is back in action. The Bulldogs secured the Johnson Cup for the fourth straight year, winning three of four races in tough conditions against Navy. The first freshman eight, second varsity eight, and first varsity eight each won their races. Although the No. 68 men's tennis team started its weekend off with a heartbreaking 4–3 loss against St. John's on Saturday, the Bulldogs (11–4, 0–0 Ivy) rallied and enjoyed a perfect day on Sunday, when they swept both Fordham and Bryant. The team travels to No. 56 Princeton and Penn in its first Ivy matches of the season next weekend. Competing in Williamsburg, Virginia, the women's tennis team saw similar results. The No. 52 Bulldogs (8–7, 0–0 Ivy) put up a fight against Rice, but ultimately lost 4–3. But the team rallied and took down William & Mary with a score of 6–1 the next day. This weekend, the Bulldogs host Princeton and Penn. It was a similarly exciting weekend for the women's crew. The Bulldogs won all five races at the Connell Cup. The closest race still involved a margin of about seven seconds, while the varsity four won by 15 seconds. This weekend, the Bulldogs host Cornell. After two weekends of Ivy League competition, the women's lacrosse team took on three nonconference opponents in just five days last week. The Bulldogs (7–3, 1–2 Ivy) lost to BU 6–5, but then went on to defeat Cal 17–6 on Friday and Lehigh 8–7 on Sunday. This weekend, Yale takes on Princeton. Meanwhile, for the men's lacrosse team, a season of mixed results continues: in their third Ivy game, the Bulldogs fell to Penn 6–5, bringing their Ivy record down to 1–2. Michael Keasey ’16, Brandon Mangan ’14, and Conrad Oberbeck ’15 each scored two points. The softball team's double-header Ivy opener against Columbia, which was postponed from Saturday to Sunday, ended in disappointment for the Bulldogs (3–15, 0–2 Ivy): Yale lost 3–2 and 8–0, making just four hits in the two games. The Lions have won four Ivy games and remain undefeated in the league. ___________________________________________ The Yale Alumni Magazine is published by Yale Alumni Publications Inc., an alumni-based nonprofit that is not run by Yale University.
