Five years ago, the Association of Yale Alumni organized its first international Day of Service. Now the event is so popular that three former US presidents—and a possible future Commander in Chief—have signed on as honorary chairs.
You guessed it: George HW Bush ’48, George W. Bush ’68, Bill Clinton ’73JD, and Hillary Rodham Clinton ’73JD are lending their names (though not necessarily their hammers and paintbrushes) to this year's Day of Service, which takes place May 10 at hundreds of sites around the globe.
“The entire Yale family shares a bond, regardless of degree, class year, or hometown: giving back to others in service is part of our culture and traditions,” Yale president Peter Salovey ’86PhD says in honoring the honorary chairs. “As alumni, we are called to share with our communities the gifts we received at Yale, wherever we reside around the world.”
Or, as a University of Minnesota dropout once wrote: "They might call you Doctor or they might call you Chief, but you're gonna have to serve somebody."
