Weekly sports roundup: baseball goes to postseason

In a Senior Day doubleheader postponed from Saturday because of rain, the baseball team beat Brown 4–3 and 6–5 at Yale Field on Sunday. Two days earlier in Providence, the Bears had swept the Bulldogs 7–0 and 12–7. With their regular season over, Yale (19–21, 11–9 Ivy) is guaranteed at least a tie with Dartmouth for first place in the Red Rolfe Division.

If our friends at Harvard help out by winning at least one game of a doubleheader with Dartmouth tomorrow, Yale will win first place outright and play in the Ivy League Championship Series (against Columbia or Penn) for the first time since 1995. If Dartmouth wins two tomorrow, the Bulldogs and Big Green will have a one-game playoff to determine who plays in the series.

The coed sailing team, ranked No. 2 in the nation, won the New England Dinghy Championship this weekend at the team's home venue in Branford, Connecticut. The team finished well ahead of second-place Dartmouth in the 18-team field. The win  qualified the team for the ICSA National Semifinals in June.

Rowers and alumnae celebrated the 40th anniversary of Yale women's crew on Saturday at the Gilder Boathouse in Derby, Connecticut, and the crew made the atmosphere more festive by beating Radcliffe to win the Nathaniel H. Case Cup. This morning, though, the rowers, ranked No. 11 in the nation, lost their last regular-season race, falling to No. 1 Brown in Providence. After finals are over, the crew will hit the water again for the Ivy League championship on May 18.

The season may or may not be over for the No. 47 women's tennis team. They finished their regular season with a 4–3 Senior Day win over Brown Saturday, but they will find out tomorrow if they get a bid for their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament. They finish the regular season with a 14–8 record (6–1 Ivy, second place).

The No. 13 men's lacrosse team beat Quinnipiac 14–11 last Tuesday at Reese Stadium for their fifth straight win, but the streak ended in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday with an 11–10 loss to Harvard in Cambridge. The team ends the regular season with a 9–4 record (3–3 Ivy, 4th place). They have another shot at the Crimson on Friday in the Ivy League Tournament.

The women's lacrosse team ended its season with a 9–8 win over Brown at home in New Haven. The win gave the Bulldogs their most victories in a season since 2008; they end the season at 9–6 (3–4 Ivy, 5th place).

Another week, another win for the men's heavyweight crew. The rowers brought home the Carnegie Cup from Princeton on Saturday, defeating Princeton's and Cornell's first-varsity eights. Next up is the Eastern Sprints on May 18.

The men's lightweight crew had a more disappointing end to its regular season, losing all its races to Princeton or Harvard in a meet on the Charles River Saturday. They, too, will compete next at the Eastern Sprints.

For the second year in a row, the men's golf team took second place in the Ivy League Championship tournament, held over the weekend in Springfield, New Jersey. Sean Gaudette ’14 led the Bulldogs with a fifth-place individual finish.

Meanwhile, the women's golf team finished in fourth place at the Ivy championship, with Elisabeth Bernabe ’17 taking third place.

The men's tennis team, playing its final match in Providence on Saturday, lost to Brown 5–2. They finished the season with a 12–10 record (1–6 Ivy, 7th place).

Rain played havoc with the softball team's last week of play. A doubleheader against Rhode Island on Wednesday was canceled because of rain, and the Senior Day season finale against Brown was postponed from Saturday to Sunday. The Bulldogs split those Senior Day games, winning the first 7–5 and losing the second 5–2. Friday, Yale took both games in a doubleheader at Brown, 10–1 and 11–2. They finished 8–33 overall, with a 4–16 Ivy record (7th place).

Kevin Dooney ’16 of the men's track and field team won the 5,000 meters at the Penn Relays last week, setting a new Yale record of 13:59.38 for the event. The team was back in New Haven for the weekend hosting the Yale Springtime Invitational. Members of the women's track and field team won seven events at the Yale Springtime Invitational.
