Why don’t we do it in the road?

Enough with the grim statistics. Traffic safety is a serious subject, but Yale is adopting a light touch in its new campaign to get pedestrians to watch where they’re walking.

The latest entry: a poster mimicking the Beatles’s Abbey Road cover, on which the Fab Four strode across that London street—squarely in the crosswalk.

“Please Use Crosswalk,” the poster reads. Stepping in for John, Paul, George, and Ringo at the intersection of Wall and College streets* are Provost Benjamin Polak (John, in the white suit), President Peter Salovey ’86PhD (Paul, barefoot), Chief of Police Ronnell Higgins (George, in denim), and Kirsten Bechtel, an associate professor who chairs the Traffic Safety Committee (Ringo, with Beatles-length hair).

Yale is not the first institution to invoke Abbey Road to discourage jaywalking; Kolkata police reproduced the cover last year in a campaign called “Walk Like the Beatles.”

* This post has been corrected; the original post misstated the intersection.

Just one more example of why President Salovey is a rock star in my book!
