Canals to rails to trails

Most alumni will remember this as a disused railroad line—and before that it was a nineteenth-century canal—but the Farmington Canal Greenway (shown here from Hillhouse Avenue) now provides a pathway all the way to Cheshire for pedestrians and bicyclists, including a number of Yale commuters. The city of New Haven is preparing to complete the trail's last two blocks, leading to its terminus at Orange and Grove Streets, by 2017.

The Yale Alumni Magazine is published by Yale Alumni Publications Inc., an alumni-based nonprofit that is not run by Yale University. Its content does not necessarily reflect the views of the university administration.
