“Law is a living growth, not a changeless code.” The inscription above the Grove Street entrance to the Sterling Law Building offers food for thought to budding lawyers. Our quotations columnist Fred Shapiro, a librarian at the Law School, says the words were suggested by Yale law professor Arthur L. Corbin (1874–1967), one of the pioneers of the philosophy of legal realism.
