Set in stone

As they reach Phelps Gate in the commencement procession on Monday, graduates will see their class year immortalized. Since the 1850s, each Yale College class has planted a cutting of ivy somewhere on campus, with its class numerals inscribed nearby. The Class of 2016 followed the example of the Class of 1996 in planting its ivy on the outside of Phelps Hall, facing the New Haven Green.
