Calhoun: still up for debate

The visage of John C. Calhoun, Class of 1804, adorns an entryway to the residential college that is named for him. In the spring, Yale said that it would not rename the college, to the relief of some and the disappointment of others. Yesterday, President Peter Salovey ’86PhD announced the creation of a Committee to Establish Principles on Renaming, which will develop “clearly delineated principles to guide the university’s decisions on proposals to remove a historical name from a building or similarly prominent structure or space on campus.” Could those principles prompt reconsideration of a Calhoun name change? “I expect that a request will come in for John C. Calhoun,” Salovey told the Yale Daily News. “And then any outcome is possible.”
