A plaque honoring pioneering physicist Edward Bouchet, Class of 1874, 1876PhD, has been installed on the side of Vanderbilt Hall. Placed by the American Physical Society, which also presents an award in Bouchet’s name, the plaque will be dedicated formally tomorrow at the Graduate School’s annual Bouchet Conference on Diversity and Graduate Education. Bouchet was the first African American to earn a PhD from an American university; the plaque was placed near the site of the Old Laboratory (1782–1888), where Bouchet worked as a student.
