Throwback Thursday: rethinking Commons in 1969Nearly 50 years before Yale launched a plan to transform Commons into a student center, architecture student Peter Hoyt ’70MArch had the same idea—an idea we aired in our October 1969 cover story. Described as a “life-style tune-up” for Commons, Hoyt’s plan raised the floor of the dining hall by one story in order to install a new Yale Station post office on the ground floor. He also called for building a new lobby for Woolsey Hall on Beinecke Plaza, and—much like the Schwarzman Center plan—providing space for student meetings, organizations, and a theater in the basement of Commons. Hoyt first floated the plan in The New Journal; he sent copies of the piece to President Kingman Brewster ’41, who replied, “Until I read your article, I was opposed. Now I’m only skeptical.”
