Hog wild

Like some of Yale’s older buildings, Franklin and Murray colleges have ornamental carvings that require decoding. We’re especially fond of these hedgehogs above a portal in Murray, which allude both to Isaiah Berlin’s famous fox-hedgehog dichotomy (there are carved foxes across the courtyard) and to the rolled-up hedgehogs used for croquet in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
