Throwback Thursday: where there's smoke

In 1957, a magazine editor might still put a cancer researcher smoking a cigarette on the cover and not see the irony. But a  sharp-eyed ten-year-old girl sent a withering letter in response (see second photo): “In the January issue was a picture of a man. I have a note for him. DO NOT SMOKE. YOU MIGHT GET CANCER. I really shouldn’t have to tell him this, since he studies cancer.”
