This wonderful visitor from a Venetian canal had been a fraternity, probably a Sheff fraternity like some of its surviving neighbor buildings.
That's right! Stoeckel was built in 1897 for Chi Phi, a Sheff fraternity also known as York Hall. It was sold to Yale in 1935 and was used to house students until 1954, when it became part of the School of Music. It was renovated and expanded in 2009 for the Department of Music.
