Yale grandparent and honorary doctor of music Sir Paul McCartney appeared before a full house in Woolsey Hall last night to promote his new book The Lyrics. English professor Langdon Hammer ’80, ’89PhD, and poet Paul Muldoon (who edited the book) talked to McCartney about his life in writing in a conversation organized by the Schwarzman Center. McCartney said that something performers and writers share is a tendency to channel other artists, using his song “The Long and Winding Road" as an example. “In my mind I'm thinking I'm Ray Charles," he said. “It didn't come out anything like that, but I saw Ray as I was writing it, and it gave me confidence to write it.”
