65 years ago, in our July 1958 issue, we reported that, thanks to a $15 million gift from Paul Mellon ’29, Yale would build two new residential colleges across from Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Ezra Stiles and Morse Colleges would be built on the site of two New Haven high schools—Boardman Manual Training School (#1 on the photo) and Hillhouse High School (#2). A third high school, Wilbur Cross (#3), was also demolished and eventually became the site of the Law School's Baker Hall.
