Now and then: Payne Whitney's predecessors
We published this photo of two grand Greek Revival houses on York Square in 1929, not long before they were demolished to make room for Payne Whitney Gymnasium (second photo). In the nineteenth century, York Square was a small, quiet public park, but the growing city soon encroached on the area. The city built two large high schools next to the square, then Tower Parkway cut through the middle of the park and Payne Whitney went up. The square's name lives in the one-block street York Square Place.
