He was 91. In 1966, Watres and his mother founded Lacawac Sanctuary, a nature preserve, in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. Watres studied fine art at Yale, but his university years were interrupted by his service as a Japanese interpreter for the U.S. Navy during the Second World War.
