ObituariesIn Remembrance: Franklin D. Turner ’65DD Died on December 31 2013Bishop Franklin Delton Turner, 80, the first African American to become a bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, died on December 31, 2013. The cause was prostate cancer. Bishop Turner graduated from the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and made a priority of children's ministries across his Pennsylvania diocese, working as a trouble-shooter and adviser on congregational growth. Bishop Turner's stature among black Episcopalians was heralded when St. Thomas African Episcopal Church in Overbrook, Pennsylvania, included him in a stained-glass window depicting black heroes of faith—among them St. Augustine, St. Simon, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The Philadelphia Inquirer published a full obituary on January 8, 2014. |
