In Remembrance: Frederic B. Stilmar Sr. ’36 Died on January 25 2014

Frederic B. Stilmar Sr. was born October 18, 1915, in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He died January 25, 2014, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Arlington, Virginia.

He attended the Loomis Chafee School class of 1932, Yale University class of 1936, and received a master's in chemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, class of 1937.

In 1937, he went to work at the DuPont Company, first in Milwaukee and the next year at the Chambers Works in Deepwater, New Jersey.  His early work, for which he had a number of patents, was in the field of dyes.  During the war years he worked on the development of special lubricants used in the Manhattan Project. In his later years, he invented patented materials that were used with fuels, disposal of waste water,  and in the manufacture of rubber products. After 37-1/2 years he retired on December 31, 1974.  

Fred was an accomplished pianist.  In addition to numerous local concerts, he gave a concert in Merkin Hall in NYC. He also loved to garden and to work with plants.  A number of friends and family can attest to that with their own gardens filled with his plants, especially snow drops.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Catherine Stilmar.  He is also survived by his son, Frederic B. Stilmar Jr., and his wife Jane; by his daughter, Dorothy H. Green, and her husband Michael; and by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at St. Alban's Parish Church in Washington, DC, where he and his wife had been married 70 years ago.
