Stephen was a close friend and mentor. He wrote exquisite, ambitious, musical poetry. I have much to thank him for--his friendship, his wise advice, his patience, his expansive, catholic knowledge of poetry, his witty correspondence, his hospitality, his kindness, his genius for crafting stunning, lapidary poems about family, Vermont, Japan, other poets, art, fatherhood, and the various leech gatherers he sought out in the purlieus of southern Vermont. Vermont has lost one of its finest poets.
