He served as assistant professor of epidemiology and internal medicine at the Yale School of Public Health in 1972–76, and then from 1985 until his retirement in 1999 he was professor of medicine and epidemiology at the School of Medicine and the hospital epidemiologist at Yale New Haven Hospital.
