In Remembrance: Monika G. Zulliger Bopp-Oeste ’60MS Died on May 30 2018

Monika Guadalupe Zulliger Bopp (Oeste), born April 10, 1933, in Mexico City to German parents, died suddenly May 30, 2018, at her home in Saint André de Sangonis, France. After her marriage at age 28, she moved to Peru, where her children were born, and then eight years later to Switzerland, where she lived for over 30 years before retiring first to Mexico and then finally to France.

Throughout her long and happy life, Monika was calm, kind, and generous and never lost her passion for protecting children. She graduated with a master’s degree in biology from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in 1956 and earned an MS in botany from the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1960.

Among many other positions, Monika worked as the first woman paleobotanist in Mexico, participating in historic and prehistoric plant research on behalf of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. Plants and nature remained central interests throughout her life and in later years she worked at the University of Basel in Switzerland.

Devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Monika is survived by her husband, Fredy; her three children, Gabriela, Katharina, and Thomas; four grandchildren; and her brother, Peter Bopp.
