Born in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, Cox enrolled in the Navy in 1940, operating out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Iceland. Cox purchased a small home heading company with his with Margery which they ran together for more than twenty years before their retirement in 1980 in Palm Harbor.
