I met Dr. Lucian Platt at Villanova University in 1962. I remember him as a stern, determined young man, proud of his American family origin. He was a good and accurate teacher not given to bluffing. He was also a Protestant working in a Catholic milieu and For this, I believe, he came into conflict with the department chairman, a Chinese paleontologist converted to Catholicism, not familiar with American academics, with the result that Lucian, shunned by the chairman, was forced out.in 1965. From Villanova Lucian went to George Washington and later to Bryn Mawr. The Villanova episode did not affect in any his remarkable scientific capacity.
Professor Platt was my hero, and the entire reason that I am now a geologist. I now teach intro geo, and I try to do it in the way that he did. Because he captured me.
