ObituariesIn Remembrance: Henry W. Hart ’45W Died on December 2 2018Henry Hart died on December 2, 2018, at Brandywine Senior Living facility in Litchfield, Connecticut. He was 94. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, and most recently was a longtime resident of Woodbury, Connecticut. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Charles. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; two sons, Henry and Edward; a daughter, Mary; and six grandchildren. After a year at Yale he served for three years in the infantry during World War II, in the Philippines and Japan. Returning to Yale in 1946, he majored in civil engineering, and was on the Yale track team. Upon graduating he joined two Harvard archaeologists for an expedition to Afghanistan. When he returned in 1950 he worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers constructing the Garrison Dam in North Dakota. In 1951 he married Virginia Walker of Cornwall, Connecticut. They bought a cabin in Woodbury, Connecticut. While living in Woodbury, Henry worked as a plant engineer for Scovill Manufacturing Company in Waterbury. Slowly, on weekends, he enlarged the cabin to a nine-room house, purchased more land, and planted Christmas trees. He was active in Little League Baseball, Boy Scout Troop 54, Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust, North Congregational Church, the local Board of Education, supervising the building of a new high school, and the Woodbury Scholarship Fund. When Scovill closed, he worked for Eagle Pencil, and then General Electric. In 1976 he started his own surveying and engineering business. He continued to serve in the Connecticut National Guard; when the Korean War broke out, the Connecticut Guard was activated and he was sent to Augsburg, Germany. When he retired in 1964 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. —Submitted by the family. |
