In Remembrance: Robert A. Hetherington Jr. ’55 Died on June 18 2019

Robert A. Hetherington Jr. died on June 18, 2019, after a long illness.

His major accomplishment at Yale was being the heavy weight boxing champion.  He also was a member of the undefeated Yale freshman baseball team.

After serving three years in the Coast Guard, Pooch was employed at a savings and loan in New Jersey.  He rose to become president and retired in 1992.

Breeding, raising, and showing English Bulldogs was the love of his life.  He and his wife, Jean, had more bulldog champions with their kennel than any other breeder.  Pooch also was an American Kennel Club judge and the president of the Bulldog Club of America. Recently his bulldog Annabell won the Non-Sporting Group at Westminster. Pooch was proud of having donated two of his bulldogs to Yale to be Handsome Dan mascots.

Pooch loved all animals and always had a few barnyard animals on his farm.  He once owned a whole herd of dairy cows with a milking parlor in his barn.

Pooch is survived by his wife Jean, of Apex, North Carolina, and their son Dan, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Memorial contributions cans be made to Duke HomeCare & Hospice, 4321 Medical Dr., #101, Durham, NC 27704.
